Maya Angelou was a respected writer and civil rights activist.  Her work in writing is extensive, and came after a varied list of occupations - and included poetry, memoirs, plays, movies and television shows.  Maya's autobiographies were what brought her international recognition and acclaim.  The first of these was published in 1969 and was entitled,"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."

Maya was a spokeswoman for black people and women and there have been efforts to ban some of her books.  Some central themes of her books included racism, identity, family, and travel.
